Thermodynamik ist eine wichtige Grundlagenwissenschaft für viele Bereiche des Maschinenbaus. Sie beschreibt den Transport und die Umwandlung unterschiedlicher Energieformen und die damit verbundenen Stoffeigenschaften.

In der Lehre vermittelt unser Fachgebiet diese Grundlagen vor dem Hintergrund der technischen Anwendungen in den Bereichen Energie- und Kraftwerkstechnik, Umwelttechnik, Verfahrenstechnik, Heizungs-, Klima- und Kältetechnik, Luft- und Raumfahrttechnik, Verbrennungstechnik sowie Produktionstechnik. Zudem lehren wir die Grundlagen der Wärme- und Stoffübertragung und bieten hierzu vertiefende Lehrveranstaltungen an.

In der Forschung bilden grundlagenorientierte und anwendungsbezogene Arbeiten zur Energiewandlung sowie zu Wärme- und Stofftransportprozessen den Schwerpunkt. Zur wissenschaftlichen Analyse werden theoretische Modelle, numerische Simulation und experimentelle Methoden entwickelt und angewandt. Die Forschungsthemen und –projekte sind drei Arbeitsgruppen zugeordnet:

(1) Grenzflächentransport- und komplexe Benetzung,

(2) Sieden und Verdampfen,

(3) Analyse Thermischer Energiesysteme.
